An unexpected yet beautiful marriage of two cultures, Malli is the Mexican-Jewish pop-up ‘phenom’ from Elizabeth Heitner and Nestor Silva that’s taking the LA food scene by storm.
Their pastrami tacos – a true labour of love, smoked for eight hours, rested overnight and served in heirloom blue corn tortillas with melted Swiss cheese, two vibrant salsas and hibiscus pickled onions – was voted one of Time Out LA’s best dishes of the year and described by Jenn Harris of the LA Times as “the most fun thing I’ve eaten in a long time”.
Creatively melding nostalgic Ashkenazi Jewish classics passed down to New Yorker Elizabeth with the Mexican flavours of Nestor’s upbringing, Angelinos have also fallen for belters like their Bay Scallops (kefir, horseradish, hoja santa), Corn Tamal (Pipian Verde, Smoked Buttermilk, Morels, Green Peas) and Candied Camote (coconut dulce de leche, roasted meringue, challah).
