Find us someone who can handle a piece of meat better than Richard Turner, and dinner’s on us. Sadly for you that offer excludes Richard’s partner in crime, Richard Sandiford, who is himself a red-blooded veteran of Hawksmoor, Pitt Cue and countless other meccas of carnivorous pleasures. Tricky one, isn’t it?
The duo have taken charge of the open grill at The Double Red Duke, the charming new opening from the Country Creatures family of Cotwsolds pubs and inns, and the results are everything you could possibly want from two absolute masters of all things meat and fire. We’re talking charcoal-grilled tomahawk steaks to share; steak and kidney pudding; and oyster and bone marrow gravy, accompanied by a supporting cast of lighter but no less tasty small plates like flatbreads of sheep’s milk cheese, herbs and honey; whipped cod’s roe and cod skin; and crab flan.
The ancient 17th century coaching inn doesn’t open until February next year, so this is your chance to experience the team’s signature brand of wood-fired abundance and glowing fireside conviviality ahead of time, when heavy reds, sticky figgie puddings and wintry cheer are the (other) shot in the arm we all so desperately need.
