Alex Haupt is an Australian chef with German and Japanese roots, and the owner of 101 Gowrie, arguably one of the hottest restaurants in Europe right now.
After a meteoric first three years, Alex was awarded Young Chef of the Year in 2021 by the Michelin Guide to The Netherlands, deserved recognition for his innovative ‘gaijin’ cuisine: a celebration of cultural diversity through Japanese traditions and techniques, “with a respectful disregard for the rules of regular convention”.
The Japanese word gaijin is typically a contemptuous way to refer to a foreigner. By embracing multiculturalism through food, Alex – who cut his teeth at Est. (Sydney) and Dinner by Heston (London) – hopes to shift its meaning to something altogether more positive.
The small team at 101 Gowrie produce astonishing food from a tiny space. The flipside of this is that Alex is only able to only join us for one night only (the alternative would be to shut the restaurant back home).
If you don’t want to miss Alex’s ‘scallop tempura chun bing’; kingfish kobujime, vanilla ponzu’; and ‘Dorset crab ramen’, do the sensible thing and book now, invite a friend later.
